Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as an only child. Scott attended an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. She hoped to become an instructor of English in a secondary school. The dream, however ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit college after three year of studying and becoming an aide to teachers. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. In the end, she teamed up together with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots.
