Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 in 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation her school, she went to Temple University. She took secondary school classes her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She hoped to be an high school English teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left school after three years of studying and becoming an aide to teachers. After starting her career singing at poetry events and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. Then, during Roots' performance she showed herself to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. During the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable performance experience. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
