Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th in 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an sole daughter of her grandmother. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education and also worked at two different job. She was hoping to be an English teacher in high school. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. After starting her career doing live poetry shows and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. At an Roots show she made her debut to be an artist. She then secured collaborations, including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to gain experience in performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
