Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April, 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott went to her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. Her dream was to become a English teacher at high school. The dream, however was in vain when she left college after three year of studies and was an aide to teachers. Her career began by doing live performances of poems as well as writing her own material. Then she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed in the midst of a Roots Show. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She also gained experience as a performer during her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
