Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. As an only girl Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education as well as working two positions. The hope was to become an English High School teacher. However, she was not able to achieve her dream, however, when after completing three years of study while working as a teacher assistant, she quit college. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. The singer was at a Roots concert. After that, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as a performer during The Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
