Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4, 1972. She was raised by both her grandmother and mother. She is an only-child. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. Her goal was to be an instructor of English at a secondary school. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of studies and was a teachers' aide. Being a poet She began to sing in poetry performances live. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. Through the Roots performance, she announced her artist status. In the following years, she managed to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
