Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised an sole daughter of her grandmother. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two different job. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was shattered when she quit school. She began her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. In Roots' show she showed herself to be an artist. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Additionally, she gained experience as a performer during The Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
