Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by both her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. The hope was to become an English secondary school teacher. However, her dream was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studies and was a teacher's assistant. After starting her career doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. At the Roots concert, she made her debut as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience as a performer on the Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
