Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April in 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her grandmother and mother. She is an only-child. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs while she was taking classes in secondary education. She planned to become a high school English teacher. However, her dream was cut short when after three years of study and being an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. Her career began as a spoken-word performer and performing in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. She came out during a Roots performance. Later, she secured collaborations artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was able to perform during the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
