Jill Scott is the only child of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs part-time, she also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. However, her dream was ended when, after three years of studying and working as a teachers aide she dropped out of college. She started her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. In Roots' show, she revealed herself as an artist. Later, she secured collaborations musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to learn about the performing arts during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
