Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th, 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her grandmother and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. In Temple, Scott held two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She planned to become a high school English teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit college after three year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. After starting her career doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as performers during her participation in the Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
