Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Being a single girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. In between two job opportunities, she studied secondary education. She planned to become an high school English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was cut short after she dropped out of high school. She started her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating in writing You Got Me. During Roots' show, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign with Hidden Beach Recordings.
