Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott was a student in secondary school as well as working two different job. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary institution. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student her goal of becoming a high school English teacher was cut short. She started her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and later joined forces together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate as well as co-writing You Got Me. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. Later, she secured collaborations stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
